Sympathy for the Devil
About this video
Another Stones signature piece, although they have become the band who need no introduction. They're wealthy and tasteful, and they've been around a long. long time, as this intriguing documentary demonstrates.
Here, the band talk through the genesis of Sympathy, and how the rhythm was originally made by Charlie alone. Then, says Keith, chuckling, the drum section grew to include a bunch of “stoned-out Nigerians and Ghanaians”. As the logistics of miking up drummers can prove a nightmare, they now play the track to a recorded drum loop.
The live performances of the song here are from gigs on the Bigger Bang tour. It's clearly a favourite for the band as well as the fans, and in particular check Keith ripping through his guitar solos. As he says, “It’s a nice one to stretch out on”.
